First Data: “Money on the Run”

Situation: To demonstrate its promise of making commerce more efficient and more convenient for consumers, First Data (a Western Union subsidiary) used an online promotion to encourage consumers to experience their cash transfer services.

How it worked:

• Consumers were required to complete a cash transfer transaction at the western union website or by calling a 1-800 service line.
• Once they completed their transaction they were given a unique PIN and a link to the promotion website.
• Players were required to select three of ten currency-inspired icons on the game board, each of which engaged in a virtual “race.” If the three icons chosen finished in the top three positions, players were eligible to receive prizes ranging from free game plays and Circuit City gift cards to flat screen TVs and six Grand Prize BMW convertible cars.
